Course objectives

The Master in Renewable Energy, Decentralization and Energy Efficiency (RIDEF - Energia per Kyoto) addresses the issue of developing sustainable energy systems in a period of profound and rapid change of national and international energy markets. This process is driven by privatization and liberalization in the energy sector: on the one hand liberalization risks to increase energy consumption and move countries further away from their Kyoto defined CO2 emission reduction targets. On the other hand, new market based tools such as Green and White Certificates offer significant potentials for the diffusion of renewable energies and energy efficiency.

The Master aims to provide a solid background in the field of sustainable energy systems, both by illustrating the frameworks and mechanisms which govern energy systems and markets, and by developing technical knowledge of the most important energy efficient and renewable energy distributed generation solutions.
The course addresses present or aspiring functionaries of the public sector, that are involved or in charge of developing local sustainable energy systems, as well as employees from the private sector involved in the design and provision of new energy systems and services.
The course, which is organized by the Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with the Università Iuav di Venezia, is made up of five modules and a period of internship in private or public companies or in a research institute.
The course will, to some extent, focus on the legislative and economic frameworks in place in Italy and in the European Union to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The aim of the course is to create an Energy Manager, that is a qualified expert able to deal with technical issues and economic and legislative matters, having a global overview of the whole energy transformation process, that goes from the production to end use, and having basic knowledge about a series of environmental issues such as sustainable transport or emission abatement strategies. Energy policy instruments, including information and formation campaigns will also be an important part of the classes.

The course will be held mostly in Italian and, though full fluency is not required, candidates must have sufficient grasp of the language to apprehend the material presented.
